Invitation to join ‘Friends of Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition at Mayfield Festival’

The 2016 competition will take place from 27 April to 1 May, and will form the central event of Mayfield Festival, which itself runs from 24 April to 8 May. It’s an exciting development for the Mayfield Festival which has been held every other year in the village for almost 50 years and is recognised globally as one of the UK’s premier classical festivals.

The move to Mayfield also helps to secure the future of the Competition which started in 1979 and has played an important role in the early careers of several internationally celebrated musicians. Past winners include piano virtuoso Paul Lewis, now the competition’s President; opera stars Anne Sofie von Otter and Patricia Rozario; great Spanish clarinettist Joan Enric Lluna; Russian pianist Yuri Didenko; and flautist Michael Cox, currently principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

The name of the competition will now be ‘Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition at Mayfield Festival’.  In parallel with this move, the Council for the competition has decided to formalise our network of Competition supporters into a Friends group.   We feel that the benefits of having a Friends group will be:

  • By joining the Friends, people demonstrate their ongoing commitment to the Competition
  • Friends can feel valued and involved with the Competition
  • Friends can feed back their views about the Competition to the Council
  • Friends can offer to help in running the Competition as hosts, stewards etc
  • Regular donations from Friends will help secure the Competition’s future
  • Friends can be offered benefits like early booking and season tickets

Whether or not you are already a supporter of the competition, we hope you will consider joining the Friends group.   You can choose the level of support that you feels appropriate for you.   Friends and patrons will be kept in touch via a bi-annual newsletter, will receive priority booking for Competition events and other benefits as outlined below.
