Invitation to join ‘Friends of Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition at Mayfield Festival’

We encourage you to support the great work of the Competition by joining us as a Friend or Patron. The Competition is run entirely through voluntary support and could not take place without the help of people like you. We have a reputation amongst competitors for being one of the friendliest international music competitions, because of our network of host families and volunteers. We would love you to join this network.

The 2018 competition will take place from 2nd to 6th May 2018, and will form the central event of Mayfield Festival, which itself runs from 29 April to 13th May. Mayfield Festival has been held every other year in the village for almost 50 years and is recognised globally as one of the UK's premier classical festivals. The Competition started in 1979 and moved to Mayfield in 2016. It has played an important role in the early careers of several internationally celebrated musicians. Past winners include piano virtuoso Paul Lewis, now the competition's President; opera stars Anne Sofie von Otter and Patricia Rozario; great Spanish clarinettist Joan Enric Lluna; Russian pianist Yuri Didenko; and flautist Michael Cox, currently principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

By joining us as a Friend or Patron, you can demonstrate your ongoing commitment to the Competition. The Council works in partnership with our Friends and Patrons to:

  • Make you feel valued and involved with the Competition
  • Listen to your views about the Competition, so that we can learn and improve
  • Involve you as volunteers during the Competition as hosts, stewards and helpers
  • Give you opportunities to meet the aspiring young musicians who take part in the Competition
  • Secure the Competition's future through regular donations from Friends and Patrons
  • Offer you benefits like early booking, season tickets and participation in events

Whether or not you are already a supporter of the competition, we hope you will consider joining the Friends group. You can choose the level of support that you feels appropriate for you. Friends and Patrons will be kept in touch via a bi-annual newsletter, will receive priority booking for Competition events and other benefits as outlined below.
